On view from June 10 – July 17, 2016, ‘Transcendence’ presents a series of sculptures and paintings by Canadian artist Floyd Sinclair. In a world bound by limitations, imposed by race, skin colour, gender, social status and conventional notions of beauty, Floyd’s sculptures and paintings transcend these limitations by shedding light on the shared aspects of our humanity. From contemplative and pensive figures to faces ranging in skin tones, Floyd captures both the subtle and obvious differences and similarities in our humanness. Captivated by the human form, Sinclair views it as the perfect vehicle to represent human complexities; his works use figures, layered content, mixed media and composition to represent diverse aspects of human nature. The result is a tranquil but powerful quality that supersedes the moment and captures the human spirit in its purity. The intention in Sinclair’s work is to spark an internal dialogue within the viewer and to challenge and transcend limiting beliefs, judgments and labels. The exhibition explores a realm beyond our individual realities so as to gain an awareness of the world around us in new ways.
Floyd Sinclair grew up in Montreal’s west island, in the suburb of Pierrefonds and is currently living in New Westminster, BC. He has had numerous solo and group exhibits in Montreal, QC, Toronto, Peterborough, ON and New Westminster, BC.
