Friday, May 11

Night market | Shipyards Night Market

The Shipyards Night Market is open this weekend until Friday, September 28th, 2018.

Visitors will find fresh food, locally made products, musicians, art and entertainment every Friday night. The festivities in the Square kick off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday nights. In addition, there is live music until 10:00 p.m. on the Shipbuilders’ Stage, showcasing talent from all over BC.

Art | Mattie Gunterman

Presenting the paintings of Emily Carr with forty-eight photographs by US-born photographer Mattie Gunterman, this exhibition draws on the Gallery’s deep holdings of Carr’s work to reflect her engagement and affection for BC’s landscape.

Film | WET

Set during the height of Canada’s involvement in the Afghanistan War, this raw and immersive play examines love, abandonment, and the dire cost of combat. Directed by Chelsea Haberlin, the story follows a Canadian soldier who returns home to her husband and young daughter. She finds herself abandoned by the country she served, in a near-catatonic state, trapped in a basement suite with her unemployed and intimacy-starved husband.

The annual Richmond Night Market will be back May 11th, offering visitors over 100 food stalls and 200 vendors to purchase from.

There will also be live entertainment, carnival rides, and a variety of games.

The theme is the 2018 market is “amazing summer”, which means that visitors get to experience a tropical paradise without having to leave town. Plus, adding to the aspect of tropical paradise, guests have the chance to win a seven day escape to Hawaii (including flight and hotel)!

In a social and relaxed environment, create your own beautiful table-top floral art from fresh flowers and learn about floral arranging from award-winning floral designer Louisa Lam. Your arrangement will make the perfect Mother’s Day gift, or you can use your new skills for the summer wedding season or to artfully display the blooms in your garden.

Concert | MGMT

Indie-rock band MGMT will perform at the Orpheum Theatre this weekend. Tickets start at $59.

Comedy | Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman

Director/actor Kevin Smith and actor/radio host Ralph Garman come together for Hollywood Babble-On, a comedic event. Tickets are $59.50.

Art | Dali Exhibition

Opened in 2005, Chali Rosso Art Gallery focuses mainly on works from Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Degas, and more.

The Gallery is holding a free Salvador Dali exhibition starting this May up until September. As part of the Definitely Dali Project, two iconic Dali sculptures will be at the Chali-Rosso Art Gallery: Woman Aflame and Surrealist Piano.

Learning | Burnaby Festival of Learning

The Burnaby Festival of Learning celebrates lifelong learning in unconventional ways, featuring a week-long series of free events for everyone that will inform, engage and spark creativity.

Art | ART SMASH Street Party

ART SMASHGranville Island has been working with their producing partner Vancouver Mural Festival to bring together 10 local and global artists to create new murals. These murals will transform their newest public space, the Chain and Forge, into a vibrant outdoor art gallery!

On Saturday, May 12th, a free event with murals, live music, local craft breweries, food trucks, and interactive performances will take place.

La Fontana Caffe is holding a Disney Karaoke this weekend and there’ll be group singalongs, solos, duets, and more!

You can choose to show up in costume, because there’ll be prizes for the best costume. Specifically, they’ll have best cosplay AND best Disney bound.

Film | Vancouver Film School Open House

Vancouver Film School inviting you to come discover more about four core programs that are a gateway to your creative future.

Charity | Balding for Dollars

Last year’s Balding for Dollars event raised over $100,000. Over 500 family members, friends, and staff gathered at BC Children’s Hospital to shave their heads or cut-off their locks in support of kids with cancer. In addition, they enjoy the carnival atmosphere, which included live band, arts and crafts, a post shave photo area. Also, there’s an array of delicious goodies for the participants and supporters to enjoy. Admission is by donation.

May 18 | Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair

The 72nd annual Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair takes place from Friday, May 18th – Monday, May 21st, 2018.

The Cloverdale Invitational Rodeo will once again feature the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls! As such, they compete for cash prizes in live, roughstock rodeo events. Favourites include Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding and Bull Riding, as well as Ladies Barrel Racing.

May 18 | David Blaine

David Blaine will be appearing at Queen Elizabeth Theatre; the doors open at 7pm and the show starting at 8pm.
