SUMMARY:Bard on the Beach 2026
DESCRIPTION:This isn’t your high school English class’ Shakespeare– it’s Bard on the Beach! Presenting plays written by the Bard himself\, Bard on the Beach is an annual Vancouver tradition that features a series of expertly directed and acted Shakespearean plays. \nBard on the Beach 2026\nBetween June and September 2026\, the company is putting on four productions: The Merry Wives of Windsor\, Macbeth\, Goblin:Oedipus\, and Antigone. These will take place on the BMO Mainstage and Douglas Campbell Theatre\, under the tents at Vanier Park. \nPhoto: Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival\nWhether you prefer drama\, intrigue\, or comedy\, you won’t be short of excitement with Bard on the Beach’s performances. This 2026 season is sure to have you learning all about Shakespeare’s brilliant writing. It’ll have you turning from a “Shakespeare agnostic into [a] Shakespeare lover\,” as Bard Founding Artistic Director Christopher Gaze puts it. \nWe’ve listed below what each production is about\, so you can read for yourself which of Shakespeare’s works you’d like to experience. \nThe Merry Wives of Windsor: BMO Mainstage\nShakespeare’s laugh-out-loud comedy comes alive with music in and around the community athletic centre of a (fictional) Vancouver suburb that is seriously obsessed with soccer. This classic farce follows the roguish Sir John Falstaff\, who sets out to fix his financial woes by wooing two married women so that he can steal their husbands’ fortunes—only for his targets\, Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Page\, to come together and turn the tables on him. With lively musical numbers woven throughout\, this production guarantees an evening of laughter\, mischief\, and merriment.   \nMacbeth: BMO Mainstage\n“What’s done cannot be undone.” A thrilling exploration of fate\, desire\, and downfall\, Macbeth tells the tragic tale of a victorious general who learns from a prophecy that he will become King. Spurred on by his own desires and the ruthless encouragement of his wife\, Macbeth murders King Duncan and seizes the crown\, before descending into tyranny as he tries to hold onto his throne. Recognized as one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most popular tragedies\, this production grounds the story in a harsh\, dystopian world. Stark design and stylized visuals heighten themes of power and paranoia drawing audiences deep into a world that is as haunting as it is unforgettable. \nGoblin:Oedipus: Douglas Campbell Theatre\nA riotous reinvention\, Goblin:Oedipus is performed by the wildly popular Goblins—WUG\, KRAGVA\, and MOOG—whose irreverent take on Macbeth delighted audiences at Bard on the Beach in 2023. This time\, the trio brings their chaotic curiosity and hilarious audience interaction to a fresh retelling of Sophocles’ tragic myth Oedipus the King\, adapted by John Murrell. Amid a deadly plague that grips Thebes\, Oedipus vows to uncover the murderer of the previous king\, only to set himself on a path of shocking self-discovery. Determined to delve deeper into the Dionysian degeneracy of the human race\, three Goblins offer up a cautionary tale of patricide\, incest\, and eye-gouging comedy that you won’t forget. \nThis production is for audiences that are 18 years of age and older. It contains adult themes and strong language that some people may find offensive. \nAntigone: Douglass Campbell Theatre\nThis bold new adaptation by local playwright Kate Besworth presents Sophocles’ classic Greek tragedy for a contemporary audience. Antigone\, the daughter of Oedipus\, defies King Creon’s decree by burying her rebel brother in the aftermath of a civil war\, setting off a chain of events that pits family loyalty against political authority—leading to devastating consequences. Exploring themes of resistance\, voice\, and generational reckoning\, Antigone is raw\, timely\, and emotionally potent\, offering a story as relevant now as it was in ancient Greece. \nPhoto: Bard on the Beach\nTickets are currently starting at $30 for regular performances. Previews have special prices available for 35% off. Additionally\, youth prices from ages 6 to 18 get 50% off regular priced tickets. \nBard After Dark\nBard After Dark is a series of four late-night shows\, presented by Tightrope Theatre. These are adults-only performances that feature performers like Rebecca Northan\, Ali Froggatt\, Bruce Horak\, Peter Oldring\, and so many more. \nExpect late-night shenanigans where anything is possible. It could be comedy\, or it could be total mayhem! \nYou can come for just Bard After Dark or add the experience onto your same-day evening play ticket for a cabaret with drinks\, laughs\, and improv at the Douglas Campbell Theatre on these dates: \n\nFriday\, August 7 at 10pm\nFriday August 14 at 10pm\nFriday\, August 21 at 10pm\nFriday\, August 28 at 10pm\n\nEVENT DETAILS: \n📅 Date: June 9 – September 19\, 2026 \n📍 Location: Vanier Park \n🎟️ Tickets & More Info: Bard on the Beach

SUMMARY:Greg Girard
DESCRIPTION:The Polygon Gallery presents the first major survey of Greg Girard\, one of Canada’s most influential contemporary photographers\, from July 10–Oct. 25\, 2026. \nThe exhibition presents more than 160 photographs spanning the past half century\, including never-before-seen outtakes from his iconic photobooks\, and traces his evolution as an artist. The show unfolds chronologically beginning with some of the earliest images Girard took as a teenager in 1970s Vancouver. The exhibition then follows his footsteps as he traveled down the West Coast and beyond\, landing as a freelance journalist in Asia and contributing to publications like Time Magazine where he was oftentimes at the front line of civil unrest and conflict. \nFollowers of Girard’s work will recognize images from the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City and Shanghai — and will discover that in addition to his urban landscapes\, he has a mastery of portraiture. The exhibition provides a sense of how he moved through the world\, and ends on his most recent photographs as he revisits the subject of the Lower Mainland\, with shots of North Vancouver and Surrey included. The exhibition will open simultaneously as the launch of his new publication Greg Girard – Photographs 1972–2026. \nAdmission to The Polygon Gallery is by donation\, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. \nEVENT DETAILS: \n📅 Date: July 10 – October 25\, 2026 \n📍 Location: The Polygon Gallery \n🎟️ More Info: Greg Girard at The Polygon Gallery

SUMMARY:Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival is back for another year. \nBuilding upon last year’s theme\, “The Lense of New Era”\, the 2026 Festival centers on “New Generation Lenses” as its core theme. This theme explores how Taiwan’s emerging generation of image-makers express personal identity\, cultural consciousness\, and social perspectives through distinctive viewpoints\, innovative storytelling\, and diverse media practices. \nVancouver Taiwanese Film Festival\nAmid the tides of globalization and digital transformation\, young creators have grown up immersed in social media\, multicultural environments\, and cross-disciplinary artistic landscapes. Their lenses are not merely tools for capturing images\, but symbols of observation\, reflection\, and expression. Through short films\, documentaries\, VR/AR\, interactive media\, and new media storytelling\, “New Generation Lenses” showcases the Taiwanese youth’s creative engagement with issues such as urbanization\, ethnicity\, gender\, technological change\, and environmental concerns. \n“The Lense of New Era”  not only continues the exploration of visual media and self-expression introduced in “The Filter Era\,” but also places greater emphasis on how a new generation of creators re-envisions Taiwan and the world through their lenses—building cultural dialogue and community connections through moving images. \nThe 2026 festival marks a significant milestone in bringing Taiwanese cinema to the international stage. Through the integration of heritage\, innovation\, and cross-cultural communication\, VTWFF aims not only to showcase Taiwanese culture in Canada and North America\, but also to share the essence of Taiwanese artistry with global audiences. This edition of the festival seeks to deepen global understanding of Taiwan\, highlight its resilience and creative spirit\, and usher in a new chapter for Taiwanese cinema worldwide. \nEVENT DETAILS: \n📅 Dates: September 4 – 5\, 2026 \n📍 Location: VIFF Centre \n🎟️ Tickets & More Info: Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival
