October’s Draconid meteor shower will illuminate skies across British Columbia this weekend.
As reported by EarthSky, “October’s Draconid meteor shower – sometimes called the Giacobinids – radiates from the fiery mouth of the northern constellation Draco the Dragon”.
This shower favours temperate and far-northern latitudes, such as the U.S., Canada, Europe and northern Asia because “the radiant is located so far north on the sky’s dome”.

People across Metro Vancouver and the rest of BC can expect to see the meteor shower on either Sunday, October 7th or Monday, October 8th, 2018.
EarthSky also shares that “the new moon on October 9, 2018, guarantees a dark sky for the peak night of this shower”.
Stargazers should also know that this meteor shower is not fast, “rarely offering any more than 5 meteors per hour,” continues EarthSky.
It’s advised that you get away from the city lights to ensure that there’s enough darkness to see the full display.
