Delta Police Introduce ‘StarChase’ Darts To Track Fleeing Vehicles

Starchase - Delta Police Launch GPS Tracker To Prevent Need For High-Speed Chases

The Delta Police Department is one step closer to eliminating the need for high-speed car chases with its ‘StarChase’ technology that has now been added to eight police vehicles.

Last year, the police department announced their interest in StarChase, built by an American company. They researched a number of options after an increasing amount of “failing to stop” incidents occurred.

StarChase was eventually decided on as it allows officers to shoot the vehicle with a dart attached to the grill that will track the offending vehicles location—allowing them to approach when it comes to a stop rather than chasing it down.

The Delta Police Foundation stepped up to fund the initiative and now after several months of training and installing the equipment—it is ready for deployment.

Chief Dubord says, “We certainly appreciate the support of the Delta Police Foundation in funding this project. We are now looking forward to seeing this technology in action. However, we do recognize there is no one tool that serves as a “silver bullet” to solve any one issue. I do believe it is incumbent on us to employ advanced technology options that may assist us in our efforts to be effective at doing our job while mitigating risk to the public. The Delta Police will be assessing the workability and functionality of the technology in operational environment over the course of this next year.”
