Charges Laid After Racist Video Goes Viral

Just over a week ago, a video filmed in Abbotsford showcasing an extremely racist confrontation went completely viral, leading to an outcry from the public to punish the offensive man.

Now, police have confirmed that 47-year-old Karry Vernon Corbett of Hope, BC, has been charged with several offences, including two counts of assault, one count of Uttering Threats and one count of Causing a Disturbance.

The only problem: Corbett is nowhere to be found.

Abbotsford Police have issued a warrant for his arrest, asking for the public’s help in locating the Hope native.

Although Corbett did not physically assault the South Asian victim from the video, the APD have charged him with these counts since they are not restricted to physical contact.

It can be gesturing and posturing and having the ability to do that person harm and we believe Mr. Corbett did that first to the 72-year-old traffic attendant, then to the witness,” explains Constable Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police Department.

The video shows a disgusting display of racism, with countless racial slurs and derogatory language used towards the victim.

Police have called in BC’s Hate Crime Unit, but have yet to approve of any hate crime charges in the case, though it may be considered.

If you have seen Corbett or know of his whereabouts, police ask that you please get in touch with them by calling 911 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
