According to Passport Index, the world’s most popular online interactive tool which collects, displays and ranks the passports of the world, the Canadian passport is the fourth most powerful in the world.

To determine the individual rank of each passport, a three-tier method is applied:
- Visa-Free Score (VFS) – includes visa-free (VF) and visa on arrival (VOA)
- VF portion of their score vs VOA
- United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index 2015 (UNDP HDI) is used as a tiebreaker. The UNDP HDI is a significant measure on the country’s perception abroad.

Topping this year’s list is the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with Germany coming in at #2.
The Canadian passport tied for fourth with:
- Belgium
- Austria
- Japan
- Greece
- Portugal
- Switzerland
- United Kingdom (UK)
- Ireland
Least Powerful Passports
Afghanistan has the least powerful passport. Other notable countries that were found at the bottom of the ranking include:
- Iraq
- Pakistan
- Syria
- Somalia
- Yemen
- Sudan
- Iran
