Burnaby Man Chooses Poker Over Grad School; Wins $427K

School isn’t always the answer and they say just follow your dreams. Well, one Burnaby man did just that. After graduating with a BA in psychology from UBC he risked it all for a shot at a dream career in poker and it paid.

Michael Niwinski left Vegas $427,930 US richer after placing fifteenth at The World Series of Poker Monday in Las Vegas.

The tournament started out with 6,737 players and Niwinski was one of twenty seven players vying for a spot at the final table where each player is guaranteed 1 million dollars and the jackpot prize is 8 million.

Niwinski was relatively unknown in the world of poker and entered the prestigious tournament with his lifetime tournament winnings of $13,405.

The World Series of Poker is down to just nine players.

Among those coveting for a spot in the final round that will be played in Las Vegas on Halloween is 31 year old Griffin Benger, a fellow Canadian, video game guru and first place ranked online poker player.
