The Southern Gulf Islands are getting a much needed boost as the first of three brand new B.C. Ferries vessels is making its way to B.C.

The new Salish Class fleet will offer relief to the aging Queen of Burnaby that currently serves the route between Powell River on the Sunshine Coast and Comox on Vancouver Island.

In the peak season, there will be more sailing opportunities and an increase in capacity of approximately 45 per cent.

The Salish Class ships will be the first in B.C to be powered by liquid natural gas.

BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says the organization has been working closely with Fortis B.C. to ensure a smooth sailing.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work with Fortis B.C.,” Marshall said. “We don’t expect any hiccups with it.”

The first Salish Class ship recently departed from Poland and is expected to arrive anytime between the next 45 to 55 days.

Upon arrival, crew members will have a training period and public information sessions will be held.

The Salish Orca will be placed into service in the spring of 2017.
