Imagine a world of sugary desserts on every corner; pastries so puffy and warm, they melt in your mouth on contact; milkshakes so creamy, you can’t have just one. Well, 604 folks, you don’t have to travel to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory in order to satisfy your sweet tooth. Burnaby is home some dainty dessert shops without the hassle of having to win a golden ticket.
You may feel as if you did after trying these mouth-watering treats, though.
Glenburn Soda Fountain & Confectionary | 4090 Hastings Street
If you’re a big buff when it comes to soda floats and everything ice-creamy, Glenburn should be on your dessert hit list. Like, right now. This gem serves up a variety of unique sauces for your choice of floats, splits, sundaes and more. We absolutely adore everything on the menu, but you need to go on a Sunday and get the Sundae Special. Each week is something new – like the Rootbeer Float Sundae featuring vanilla and chocolate ice cream, Rootbeer, caramel, white chocolate crisp pearls, whipped cream and a wafer cookie straw.
Café Joie | 6125 Sussex Avenue
Described as one of the coziest cafés in all of Burnaby, this prized coffee shop will surprise you with their dessert menu. Feeling cute? You can order a tray of colourful bear-shaped macarons. And if you want a winning combo, be sure to try the Sweet Potato Latte paired with a Chocolate Banana Waffle topped with your choice of macaron.
Sulmida Dessert Café | 4697 Kingsway
This crazy place whips up a mean frappe. Sulmida’s signature item gives customers the choice to customize their frothy drinks with a variety of toppings. Our favourite has to be the Caramel Popcorn. If you want to shake things up in your life, try the Mango Cheese Bingsu: mango flavoured shaved ice topped with fresh cut mango and cheesecake cubes. It’s basically a bowl of delicious dessert poutine heaven.
Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie | 4717 Hastings Street
The name says it all. This hotspot for chocolate and flakey pastries is a must-try for anyone who craves a sweet indulgence taken to the next level of perfection. This quaint, bakery-style shop offers cakes, macarons, hot drinks, eclairs and much more. If you do make the trek, be sure to order as many croissants as possible. They’re a big hit, and for good reason. You need to try the Double Baked Hazelnut croissant. You’re welcome for blowing your taste buds’ mind.
Ki Tea House Café | 105-6888 Royal Oak Avenue
This Japanese dessert shop serves lunch, coffee and drinks, but we’ve focused on the sweets because they are the bomb. We quite like their bubble tea (especially the Taro Milk Tea with pearls) paired with a Hazelnut Waffle. Ki Tea House has other unique sweets like the Chocolate Pearl Ganache – a must try!
Crème de la Crumb | 150-4370 Still Creek Drive
Looking for a naturally fresh place to grab a warm coffee and a fluffy treat? Whether you’re on the go or stopping by the cute café, this will surely become your local favourite for dessert and more. And they cater, too! Like any bakery, you can choose from a variety of pastries and desserts. If you get lucky, they may have the Peanut Butter Banana Scone in store. It’s the best item on the menu, hands down.
