Summer is in full swing and so is beach season in Vancouver. While the sights and sounds will typically remain the same, beach-goers can expect to see a lot more chairs and umbrellas as a new rental company has officially hit the sand.
Earlier this year, the Vancouver Park Board approved a new pilot program allowing people to rent out chairs and umbrellas at English Bay.

The pilot project has a timeline of two years, and may be expanded to other beaches. They may also begin to provide additional common beach items including sunscreen and water toys.
In the meantime, the company awarded the two-year contract will focus on lounge chairs and umbrellas, which won’t exactly come cheap if you plan to spend the day on the sand.
Chairs are offered at $5 per hour, while lounge chairs start at $7 per hour. Umbrellas are priced at $3 per hour.

There are day packages available, but the average price for two people planning to spend a few hours under the sun will run over $50.
Rentals will be available for mid-morning to sunset, and will likely be more popular for tourists who don’t have access to chairs and umbrellas.
Also new to Vancouver this summer will be scooter sharing, and the love lucks sculpture set for Queen Elizabeth Park. An additional pilot program will also allow restaurants to extend patio hours to 1AM.
