BC Ferries To Add New Ships + New Sailings in 2017

Passengers who typically suffer sold out ferry sailings to the Southern Gulf Islands can let out a sigh of relief as BC Ferries will add sailings and increase capacity beginning May 2017.

The news comes after a year of public consultation, and the introduction of two new natural gas fuelled Salish-Class vessels; the Salish Orca and the Salish Raven. Both vessels are currently under construction, and will replace the Queen of Nanaimo.

Highlights of the new schedule between Tsawwassen and the South Gulf Islands:

  • In the peak season, there will be more sailing opportunities and an increase in capacity of approximately 45 per cent
  • In the peak season, there are more direct sailing opportunities on the weekends While maintaining inter-island connections on weekdays
  • Pre and post -summer shoulder seasons with two ship operation to start at the beginning of May and finish on the Thanksgiving long weekend.
  • The off-peak schedules remain similar to current service with additional sailings on busy days and new timings to facilitate connecting sailings

Given the new vessels will be more efficient and have lower fuel prices, BC Ferries states that there will be no fare increase for the new routes.
