An online petition is calling on Richmond City Council to ban styrofoam food packaging in the city.

As of Wednesday morning, the petition had more than 400 signatures.

The petition was launched by Richmond resident Michelle Li and hopes to ban styrofoam food packaging at food service businesses. This includes restaurants, food trucks, and city events.

“After seeing first-hand the amount of styrofoam littering our beaches in Richmond, I am calling on Richmond’s Mayor and Councillors to ban the use of EPS/Polystyrene take out containers at food service businesses” reads the petition.

Furthermore, Li says you can find evidence that these styrofoam containers are harmful to our environment when you visit our local beaches.

“One only need look at our local beaches to see the tiny particles of foam that are littering the shoreline”.

Many cities across North America have already enacted bans on styrofoam food packaging. Click here to see a list of those cities.
