Funding could soon dry up for a facility where University of British Columbia researchers have been studying Steller sea lions to try to understand why the animals are endangered and how to further protect their species.
The “open water lab” in Port Moody, B.C., is a collaboration between UBC and the Vancouver Aquarium.
But the funding comes from a federal fisheries program in the U.S.
“We still have a lot more questions to answer. Unfortunately, the economy in the U.S. is such that it’s drying up,” said Andrew Trites, a UBC marine mammal researcher.
Hopefully things turn around or they receive a new funding source!
