B.C.’s First Family Day Will Be Next February

Premier Christy Clark has announced that B.C. will receive it’s newest holiday called Family Day, which will be held on the second Monday in February. That mean’s the date for the first Family Day is set out to be February 11, 2013.

British Columbians helped contribute to this new holiday, by submitting their choices online to help the government determine which Monday in February would be appropriate for the new public holiday. The debate was between having the holiday take place on the second Monday of the month, or the third Monday, much like many other provinces, and would also happen to be the same day as the U.S. President’s day holiday.

Alberta was the first province to hold a Family Day in 1990. People in Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan all have the third Monday in February off.
