Late Monday afternoon, Abbotsford Police Department Chief Bob Rich confirmed that one officer died following a shootout with a suspect. He has been identified as Const. John Davidson, an officer for 24 years.
Another officer was also injured in the incident. The suspect, a 60-year-old man from Alberta, is now in custody.
Police officers arrived in the area of Mt. Lehman Road and Fraser Highway at about noon, at a strip mall north of Highstreet Shopping Centre.
The suspect attempted to drive off in a stolen car before police arrived, but the individual who made the original 911 call blocked him in with his car.
Unfortunately, the suspect emerged from the car with a shotgun and began shooting at numerous individuals.
