Last weekend thousands of women (and men) marched the streets of Vancouver, and across the world in support of women’s rights for the historic Women’s March On Washington.
Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside will be having their annual women’s memorial march on Feb. 14th near Main Street and East Hastings.
The first women’s memorial march was held in 1991 after the murder of a Coast Salish woman on Powell Street. Since then, the march was held every Valentine’s Day in honour of her and the lives of many other missing and murdered women from the Downtown Eastside.
Community members will gather at the Carnegie Community Centre Theatre at 10:30am for a remembrance ceremony.
The march will begin at noon following the ceremony, which will include stops along the way to commemorate where the women were last seen or found, speeches by activists, a healing circle and a community feast afterwards.
