The re-imagination of Dracula mythology in Van Helsing will bring vampires to Syfy which already has werewolves, zombies, aliens and ghosts. The American channel includes science fiction, horror and fantasy programming.
Syfy has broadcast popular Canadian series like Bitten and Lost Girl which both filmed in Toronto and Continuum which was set and filmed in Vancouver. There was also the American-Canadian co-production and supernatural drama Haven which was filmed in Nova Scotia and lasted 5 seasons. Currently there are American productions, filmed in Canada, like The Expanse in Toronto or The Magicians in Vancouver. Confusing right?
Canadian film tax subsidies and syndication play a big role in the mash-up and confusion around filming locations, origin countries and production credit. You can have a Canadian show picked up by an American broadcaster, which we always like to see. But you more than often have an American show simply filmed and produced in Canada. The lines blur when you have multi-national and multi-network co-productions.
So, the latest American show, to be filmed in Vancouver, is Van Helsing. It stars Kelly Overton (True Blood, Legends) as new character Vanessa Helsing, Toronto’s Jonathan Scarfe as Axel and BC’s Christopher Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels) as Sam.
“Van Helsing centers on Vanessa Helsing, the daughter of famous vampire hunter and Dracula nemesis Abraham Van Helsing. She is resurrected five years in the future to find out that vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is humanity’s last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.”
The 13-episode series is slated to film for 4 months until the end of June around metro Vancouver.
